A New Language

“God Who at sundry times and in divers manners, spake in times past unto the fathers by the prophets hath in these last days spoken unto us by (in) Son.”

Hebrews 1:1

The majestic verse which begins the wonderful epistle of Hebrews tells us that God has spoken to us in His Son. It is as though God has spoken in a language which is unique from anything else ever spoken. Here is a language which transcends all barriers. It is understandable in every culture, time, and place.

In John 1:1 the Lord Jesus is the Word. In Revelation 22:13, He is also the Alpha and Omega. Taken together, He is the alphabet of God (the Alpha and Omega), the language of God (spoke in Son), and the message (the Word). He is the totality of all God can say to men.

Once God spoke through and by men, prophets, and seers. But God has spoken now in a person, His Son. The remainder of Hebrews will unfold that wondrous message from God. It was given faithfully, fully, and with finality. God can reveal nothing more than what He has done in His Son. Little wonder that when you come to the close of the polemic portion of Hebrews, we are urged, “See that ye refuse not Him that speaketh.” (Hebrews 12:25).

Consider:

1.  God spoke in a progressive manner through the ages and required various men and means to do this. Why could He speak fully and finally in His Son?

2.  The concept of God speaking “in Son” is not so much what the Lord Jesus said, but what He was in His character.

3.  God has spoken “in these last days.” What does that suggest about the program of God and the purposes of God?
