Was Mary at the Cross? – Scott G MacLeod

Did John remove Mary from the Cross before the Lord died?

Mat 13:55  Is not this the carpenter’s son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?
-Mk6:3 will show the same, notice that James, and Joses, etc are sons of Mary, the mother of our Lord.
-The key is to take notice of the children of Mary

WOMEN BY THE CROSS

Mt27:55And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto Him:
56 Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s children.
-James & Joses were the half brother’s of Christ, see Mt13:55 & Mk6:3
-Clear that Mary was at the cross from Mt27:55-56
Mk15:40There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome;
41(Who also, when He was in Galilee, followed Him, and ministered unto Him;) and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem.
-Salome is the wife of Zebedee, the mother of James & John and a sister to Mary the mother of Christ
-‘James the less’ is a child of Mary. This James is different than the ‘sons of thunder’ James and John.
Lu23:49 And all His acquaintance, and the women that followed Him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.
Jn19:25  Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister(Salome), Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

WOMEN AT THE BURIAL

Mt27:61  And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.
-I believe ‘the other Mary’ is the Lord’s mother
Mk15:47  And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he was laid.
-Mary the mother of Joses is the mother of Christ
Lu23:55 And the women also, which came with Him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how His body was laid.
56 And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.

WOMEN AT THE RESURRECTION

Mt28:1  In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.
-I believe ‘the other Mary’ is the Lord’s mother
Mk16:1  And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.
And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.
Lu24:1 Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.
10 It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles.
Joanna is the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward, see Lu8:3
Jn20:1 The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.
Then she runneth, and…
It appears to me that Mary, the mother of our Lord was not taken from the Cross, but was there for the burial and resurrection. The verse that was stated in John 19:27 ‘…from that hour that disciple took her unto his own’. Notice that ‘home’ is italicized, therefore not in the Greek. Also notice that ‘own’ is plural, neuter and therefore would include his home. I judge that John at that moment took Mary to himself and became her guardian/provider in all things.
