Loving and Hating

Thy Throne, O God, is for ever and ever…

Thou lovest righteousness and hatest iniquity.

Psalm 45:6

Psalm 45 gives us one of those rare glimpses into a past eternity when the Father and Son conversed. We are privy to divine communications and divine appreciation. The writer to the Hebrews informs us that the Father addressed the Son and said, “Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever.” Though the Psalm looks on to the future and the eternal reign of the Son of God, the words were spoken in eternity.

The words are both a declaration and an affirmation. Eternal counsels will not be thwarted. “He must reign.” But notice the verse which follows. It tells us that He loved righteousness and hated sin. Righteousness will be the foundation of His coming Kingdom. It will be as different from every previous kingdom as can be imagined.

Yet this coming day of righteous rule all rests upon a finished work, a sacrifice accomplished at Calvary. It was accomplished by the One Who loves righteousness. Yet He was numbered with transgressors. Think of how sensitive He was to the accusation of being a transgressor, to being a lawless one. He hated sin and yet was accused of, and labeled as a sinner. He was numbered with transgressors and given a place of prominence.

But even more was to follow. He hated sin; yet at Calvary He bore our sins in His own body. He was “made sin” (2 Cor 5:21) for us, in the sense that God reckoned sin to Him and dealt with Him accordingly. He bore in love, the very thing He hated, that He might remove from before the One He loved (His Father) the thing that He hated!

Consider:

  1.  He is the “anointed One.” In Israel, prophets, priests, and kings were anointed. He is anointed by God “above His fellows.”
  1.  There are those who will be enemies of His Kingship (v 5). There will be those who will willingly serve out of devotion and subjection (vv 10-11). Which are you?
  1.  God promises to make His Name to be remembered in all generations. Do you think there has ever been a time or a moment in the day when there is not someone, somewhere, worshiping God for His Son?
